Right now we are being bombarded by negativity from the media, and it is clearly having an effect on those around us who do not know how to control their own emotional states. The fear and panic around my workplace is palpable, and people are huddling in corners talking about meetings being held by their "higher ups" to make layoff decisions.
Having been through two layoffs, I would never make light of any one's concern, but I wish they would realize that they have nothing to fear. If they set their minds, and their hearts, to making a layoff the best possible thing that could happen to them, it will be. If they decide that it is a total disaster that will ruin them financially for years to come, then it will. Both times I was laid off I ended up in a much better position down the road than I would have if I had stayed in the job I was removed from.
As I sat yesterday in a networking get together, that quickly devolved into a political debate, and then finally into a session on economic gloom and doom I must have gotten a strange look on my face. Later, one of my colleagues commented to me that I didn't really look like I believed what was being said. I told her that I most certainly did not. She scoffed, "Oh you are just an eternal optimist. Me I'm too much of a realist to think like you do." To which I replied, smiling, "I am a realist too, it's just that my reality is better than yours."
Wishing you all a great reality each and every day!

Good way of thinking, Melissa! Love your positive attitude towards life. Being laid off is a scary thing, no doubt about it. Especially when you have a family to support, bills to pay, etc. We have been through a few of those scares ourselves here. But I agree. If someone is facing getting laid off, I view it as an opportunity to go for the gold and find something even better than before.
Hi Melissa,
Great post. Negative people are just focusing their energy on the wrong areas of life. Worrying doesn’t help them if the higher up decided to lay off them. There are always something new or better out there for them if they want to find it but the issue is they chose to dwell in the wrong areas of life that fog their sights to see the opportunities around us.
Cheers

I like the response to your colleague. I feel and act the same way as you too. It is not that I don’t care about what is going on with others. But I am very protective ovcr my energy vibes. I don’t like the idea of having negativity pull me down!
Evelyn Lims last blog post..Can You Read My Mind?
I’ve just discovered your blog and it is inspiring. Thank you for that perfect comeback! I plan to use it soon on all the self-proclaimed “realists” in my life.
Also, thank you for shifting my perspective. For the past three years, I’ve been mired down in a series of circumstances and situations where my entire life basically turned upside down. I’ve been scrambling to try to reboot my life and get back on track but it seems to be one obstacle after another.
Then I got to paragraph two, line two. “If… [they decide that the experience/situation/circumstances will be] …the best possible thing that could happen to them, it will be.”
I wonder what will change, when I decide that “this” situation I’m in is the best possible thing that could happen to me?
